WAVE MACHINES: 80s POP IN SLO-MO

Ein neues Quartett aus Liverpool mit Falsett-Stimmen-Pop und reduzierten Disco-Gitarren - Wave Machines haben schnell einen eigenen Sound gefunden, klingt aber auch ein bißchen nach dem New Weird America von Grizzly Bear & Co. "Keep The Lights On" ist einer der schüchternen Höhepunkte des Debütalbums der Briten. Angenehm schlapp.

Das Indie-Pop-Trio aus Lund gab ihre neue Single "David" auch als free Download für ihr Label Labrador frei. Um die Zeit bis zum bereits aufgenommenen, dritten Album zu überbrücken, verschenken die Edel-Melancholiker auch ein "Live In New York"-Album auf ihrer Homepage.
MICHAEL JACKSON SANG ABOUT MORPHINE ABUSE IN ´97

"When I saw on DrudgeReport a link to an article stating that it was possible he died from a dosage of Demorol - my mind raced to a particular song in his catalog.
Morphine was off his maligned 1997 LP Blood On The Dance Floor that followed his hits+ package spectacle HIStory.
It’s lyrics, bathed in hard industrial beats and snippets of dialogue from the movie “The Elephant Man” practically predict his own demise:
“He got flat baby / Kick in the back baby / A heart attack baby / I need your body … Trust in me / Just in me / Put all your trust in me / You’re doin’ morphine”
This was a man obsessed with the terror oscillating in his head, and clearly needed a musical release. The music swells and then abruptly, like sun through a thunderstorm,
the beats clear away to tinkling pianos and warm strings as Michael sings some of the most disturbing and ultimately, if the rumors are to be believed, honest lyrics he has ever put to tape:
“This won’t hurt you / Before I put it in / Close your eyes and count to ten / Don’t cry / I won’t convert you / There’s no need to dismay / Close your eyes and drift away … Demerol / Demerol / Oh God he’s taking demerol”
It’s a terrifying moment in his cannon that when listened to in the context of his recordings of the day (Scream, They Don’t Care About Us) could be chalked up to his burgeoning rage and frustration
that was becoming a mainstay in his music. Perhaps he was simply singing about society’s addictions at large or perhaps he was begging for help in the only way he knew he could be heard, through his music."
Jacksons zwölf Jahre alter "Morphine"-Song erscheint somit quasi als Chronik (s)eines angekündigten Todes.
CHICKS ON SPEED - EXTENDED PAINTBRUSH

Kiki Moorse hat die Band verlassen, jetzt sind Melissa Logan (links) und Alex Murray-Leslie Chicks On Speed. Auf ihrem 3. Album "Cutting The Edge" spielen beim Berlin-Hamburger Duo nun die "High Heeled Shoe Guitar" und Klangkleider mit - nicht zu vergessen: die Wiener Achse Just/Potuznik/Pulsinger, WhoMadeWho, B-52´s Fred Schneider uvm. Wie immer eine große Familie auf jeder Platte. Nach dem "Art Rules"-Kunstdisco-Knaller (inkl Videoplay in vielen renommierten Museen) wurde aus dem neuen Album die 2. Maxi-Single "Supersurfer Girl" ausgekoppelt - nomen est omen: eine schnittige Surf-Pop-Nummer, die zur COS-Mode-Linie für eine Frauen-Surf-Firma verlinkt. Wer die Chicks On Speed kennt, der weiß, es wexeln sich Pop-Hymnen ("Sex In Der Stadt") mit humorvollen Experimental-Tracks ("Sewing Machine") ab, gefolgt von Soundschnipseln (wie zB ein Mitschnitt einer Kunstaktion). Das Doppel-Album (wieder erschienen auf ihrem Label Chicks On Speed Records, das 2008 auch Gustav veröffentlichte) kann man nicht mal schnell nebenbei durchhören. COS fordern ihre Zeit & ihren Tribut: widme dich ihnen oder du kommst nicht rein! Das Thema Kunst taucht auch in diesem Free-Download-Track auf, den es auch auf ihrer Seite gibt, in dem sie singen "Art Is Over"...
GELUNGENE DEUTSCHLAND-PREMIERE: THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART IN MUNICH

Sie waren überwältigt von der deutschen Gastfreundschaft ("this hospitality!") und dem bayerischen Bier ("it´s called ´hell´!") - und ihr erstes Konzert in Deutschland war komplett überzeugend: The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart spielten sich sofort in die Herzen der Münchner. Das Konzert des New Yorker Quintetts in engen Jeans (und 1x Minirock) im 59To1-Club inkl einem neuen Song zeigte, daß TPOBPAH tatsächlich weniger C86-Shoegazer sind als Power-Pop à la Teenage Fanclub, Lemonheads oder Mega City 4. Sie sehen sich auch eher als "C96" - also eher beeinflußt von 90er Bands, sprich Nirvana, den Pumpkins und vor allem Sonic Youth.
Ihr Debüt-Album (erschienen auf Fortuna Pop) ist das wohl beste Indie-Pop-Album in der ersten Hälfte von 2009.
SONIC YOUTH SOUL PUNK SONG from DIVISION OF LAURA LEE

Division Of Laura Lee ist eine schwedische Punk-Rock-Band, die es seit 1997 gibt. Und daß sie nicht am regulären Alk-Punk interessiert sind, zeigt ihr Namensbezug: Laura Lee war eine Soulsängerin. Auf ihrem neuen Album "Violence Is Timeless" (ja, vor 12 Jahren tat alles genauso weh wie heute), das in Deutschland auf dem Kölner Label Unter Schafen am 22.5. erscheint, haben sie mit dem Opener "Caress/Hotnights" einen Knaller drauf, der allen Indie-Rock-Fans auch gefallen sollte. Highlight ist aber der Song "Silver Ghost", der an Sonic Youth in ihren zugänglichen Momenten erinnert.
